Carrot virus Y (CarVY), presumably native to Australia, has not previously been detected in the EU and has now been found for the first time on carrots in two farms in Bavaria. It is not yet listed in the annexes of Regulation (EU) 2019/2072 or with the EPPO. 

The virus naturally infects carrots, but other host plants have also been infected in experiments. It is assumed that CarVY can occur at least transiently in Germany due to the presence of host plants, and its establishment in warmer EU Member States is very likely. 

Based on current knowledge, CarVY poses a low phytosanitary risk for Germany. The risk is probably higher for southern EU Member States, but can be significantly reduced through cultivation measures. Therefore, the virus is not classified as a quarantine pest, and Article 29 of Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 does not apply. However, it is recommended that a survey be carried out in 2026 in the vicinity of the infested areas on wild carrots and other potential host plants (Apiaceae) to clarify whether the virus is already present in the wild flora.
